Using Your CrockPot as a Rice Cooker

Published: Mon, 04/16/18

Hello there, Slow Cookerers!!

I hope you are doing well.

I love coming up with new ways to use the-very-best-kitchen-appliance-ever,

and here is one that consistently surprises people:

You Can Use Your Slow Cooker to Make Rice.

yup!

:-)

Here's how to do it:

These are the quantities used in a 1 to 2 quart slow cooker.

I use this one -- if you have a larger crockpot, multiply the quantities.

For a 4 quart, multiply everything by 2 -- double it.
For a 6-quart, multiply everything by 3 -- triple it.

CrockPot Slow Cooker Rice
1.5 quart recipe

1 tablespoon butter
1 cup white basmati rice
2 cups water
pinch of salt

The Directions:

-- rub butter on the inside of your crockpot stoneware
-- put in rice
-- stir in water and salt
-- cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours, checking every 45 minutes or so.
I cooked the above batch for 2 hours, 15 minutes and checked on it twice.

HEY STEPH, what if I want to make Brown rice, or Wild rice, or Quinoa?

In theory it should work the same way but my best suggestion would be to make white rice first, make sure you like how it turns out; how it cooks in your particular pot, and THEN try the "fancy" rice.
That said, in the comment section of the post readers have written in on how they have done brown and wild, etc etc.
:-)

The Verdict:

Fluffy, lovely rice.
If you click through to the post on the site, you can read in the comment section reader reports on how other varieties of rice work, too!

:-)

Enjoy!!! Happy Slow Cooking!!
